Today’s world is obsessed with the perfect person with the perfect body. Even the people who we idolize on the big screen in Hollywood movies and the supermodels who land on the cover of all of the major magazine covers, are airbrushed. How is it that the most beautiful people in the world, who we believe do not need altering, are demanding to be altered in these media forms?

Once again the answer lays in society’s obsession with body image. Those who are most affected are women. And young ladies are the most impressionable of them all. However, body image to a certain degree is healthy. When we have a good sense of self we tend to excercize and eat right to keep ourselves looking good.

How a person sees him or herself in the mirror reflects how one feels about him or herself in life. A classic example is a woman who is going through menstruation. For three weeks a thin woman may have an excellent body image and she feels great about herself. However, during menstruation she may feel bloated, making her feel ugly and hate her body image although it is the same body. Obviously ,this is a temporary situation. On a regular basis, though, there are people who hate themselves because they hate their body. Plastic surgery may be an excellent resource to help one’s body image issues but only under the right circumstances.

For example, a young woman wants breast implants so that she has a bust like Scarlet Johanson. This is fine if it simply helps her to feel better about herself and doesn’t stem out of some sort of self hatred.

Someone who is overweight may want gastric bypass surgery or liposuction. These may be great remedies, but if the person is going to have these surgeries just to improve him or herself and maintain his or her previous lifestyle than this too is unacceptable. Body image plastic surgery is for people who want to make the change in order to change his or her lifestyle and mental state.

So what would be good examples of people who are considering plastic surgery to enhance his or her body image? We can look back to the example of someone who is overweight. If he or she starts dieting and exercising and can prove a steady healthy lifestyle then liposuction may be an option, if he or she cannot perfect a part of his or her body. Also, if the person has some sort dissatisfaction with his or her appearance such as a mole or flapping skin from weight loss or pregnancy, than body image plastic surgery may be option. With the removal or addition of certain features many people begin to gain back their confidence through their positive body image surgery.

There are many positive results that come from body image plastic surgery if the patient is certain that the surgery will boost his or her self body image and it is not done because they want to idolize a famous celebrity or to maintain their old lifestyle.
