In terms of surgical cosmetic surgery between men and women, liposuction was the leading surgery performed with 456,828 patients. Breast augmentation came in second with just a little under 400,000 patients. Interestingly enough, the leading cosmetic surgery for women was breast surgery and breast reduction came in fifth with 153,087 women patients. Between both men and women Botox was the leading cosmetic of non surgical work performed on patients with 2,775,176 people having Botox injected.
In general plastic surgery consists of over ninety percent of women patients. However, plastic surgery among men has been on the rise. From 2006 to 2007, the number of men who had committed themselves to a plastic or cosmetic augmentation for appearance increased seventeen percent. In 2007, there were approximately 11.7 million plastic or cosmetic surgeries and non surgeries (chemical peels, Botox injections, etc) in the United States alone. Although there are not any worldwide facts on cosmetic surgery, many Americans travel to foreign countries to have plastic surgery so that number may be even higher.
In the last ten years plastic surgery has sky rocketed. There has been a 457 percent rise in the number of people who have had some sort of plastic or cosmetic surgery done in the last ten years. Obviously this is not a trend that is going to disappear easily. And to show which are the procedures that are not going anywhere are the top five cosmetic enhancement surgeries that have been performed in 2007. They are Botox, hyaluronic acid, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and IPL laser treatment. These facts on cosmetic surgery are for the top five non surgical enhancements.
It is no joke when people comment that plastic surgery is a multi- billion dollar industry. Last year alone, the plastic and cosmetic industry brought in approximately 13.2 billion dollars from Americans alone. On a world wide level this number is even larger. The facts on cosmetic surgery are astounding since over eleven million people are having cosmetic surgery performed only to enhance their look. Although in many cases there is a medical reason for having cosmetic surgery, the majority is just to look good.
