Cosmetic surgery is a never ending process of an evolution of medical techniques to improve human appearance. Even within each individual cosmetic surgical procedure, there have been many advances. For instance in a face lift, the excess skin was removed and then closed up. As this do smooth out the lines for a while it was not helping the overall appearance. After learning more and more about the aging process, plastic surgeons realized that the fat, muscle and tissue in the face had a very large part in the overall appearance. Nowadays, doctors tighten the muscles, fat, tissue and the skin so that the person has an overall younger look. The history of cosmetic surgery has gone through some bumps in the road, but it has evolved so much. The history of cosmetic surgery started with simple experimentations that at some times proved to be disastrous but now the procedures are low risk and we have even advanced to not even needing to cut into the flesh by just using lasers in some cases.
One of the most interesting facts about the history of cosmetic surgery is that it was “invented” or at least increased attention because of the various wars in the 1900s. Soldiers would come home with a variety of facial and other disfigurements. In order to fix these cosmetic problems, doctors started to really focus in on how to make the general appearances of people better when they have become disfigured. This gave hope to many people in this situation but it also made doctors realize that they could go much beyond just helping to repair faces.
Even the social though regarding plastic surgery has evolved throughout the history of cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery started out for only the rich who could afford such costly procedures. Nowadays cosmetic surgery is in some cases covered under medical insurance, there are financing options and people are earning more, allowing them to save up more for these surgeries. Plastic surgery has no become more available to all social classes. It was also very taboo in the early 1900s. It was quite obvious if someone had a procedure performed but it was not spoken about. Nowadays it seems to be a rarity to meet someone that has not had some sort of cosmetic alteration, even if it is just a shot of Botox. People are also more open to discussing their operations.
The history of cosmetic surgery continues to improve itself with more doctor’s knowledge, new discoveries and the advancement of technology. The advancements that plastic surgeons have made to make their work look as if no work had ever been done, is quite amazing. Ghastly scars are now invisible to the naked eye and this has boosted the spirit of many people who were once afraid to go into any type of surgery such as a C Section and thinking that it would leave a large permanent mark.
